How things are going at our 'real' house in Brittany...

When we viewed the house in 1999 and.....after a few years care and attention -now

Since August 1999 we have been zig-zagging backwards and forwards between a house in Brittany and our home in Worthing...We moved to our present house in Worthing almost two years ago and, although the two houses are worlds apart in every respect, they do have one thing in common - they were both definitely renovation projects when we bought them. In fact Le Roz was designated as a ruin. And I don't think either house has had any significant work done to it, nor money spent on it since around 1950. And anyway - who could afford two houses that were in a pristine and finished condition at the time they were bought? Certianly not us! So, the day to day running of www.ahouseinbrittany.com is balanced between doing up both houses - one here and one there. You may therefore hear the background noises of power tools, hammering and general mayhem (irrespective of where we are when you call). But don't worry if you hear an unfamiliar ringing tone when you call - we pay the difference when we are in Brittany.

As you can see the garden had been a trifle neglected...you should have seen the
quarter acre of brambles 7ft high behind the barns!
The picture above left is of what we were amazed to find was a barn complete with trap inside (the sort that a pony pulls). The land behind the 'trap' barn had not been tended for ten years. We were extremely lucky though that the previous owner had succumbed to water and electricity and that there had been some renovation work to the two barns...(the trap barn had obviously not qualified for the agricultural grant and has now sadly collapsed.
The house in Worthing is hopefully our meal ticket...the means to escape with a few bob in our pocket and allow a little bit of freedom when we spend (hopefully) a large chunk of time in Brittany in the future. Owning a house in Brittany is an absolute joy. Being able to bring the house back to life after years of neglect and to create something comfortable for our retirement (if I snuff it before I get the opportunity to spend a few years pottering around - a bit of painting - a little writing...ahh yes - and the gardening, as I keep telling Micki, will fit me like a glove by the time we are living there; well, there's gonna be rain for a fortnight if I don't make it there). In any case Micki also has another 'career' on hold - that of stained glass artist. In fact back in 1999 when we bought Le Roz we had plans that maybe it could become a residential course venue for creative writing or painting (not mine you understand) and stained glass workshops too. Who knows - it still might. We have the space and I'm sure there are those who would love the idea of working at their chosen craft in the morning with time off for good behaviour...in the afternoons. We'll do the food and the wine...and guests can just supply enough of the money so that we can all enjoy ourselves. Anyhow the house is progressing satisfactorily. We are currently laying the floor in the lounge and the dining room...and are about to add the finishing touches and commission the low loft as an open plan suite of bedroom , bathroom and lounge.
