Designed by Mike Reynolds of Earthship Biotecture and project managed by Kevin Trot. The Earthship has more fixtures and fittings than the conventionally-designed house usually with an ?eco-twist?. The Earthship was designed to demonstrate the viability of eco-living first hand and providing a blue-print for large-scale sustainable developments in the future. The house is made of materials which are largely local such as the material for rendering the walls ? known locally as masse, and as such the house fits easily into the setting of the surrounding properties with its blend of masse and stone. It casused a great stir when it was built and in the evenings a crows of around 200 people would gather to watch its progress! The house is situated in the village of Ger is a charming rural village in the southern area of La Manche in western Normandy. There are extensive forests and endless walking and cycling routes in the area which is an unspoilt corner of Europe. The accommodation includes 3 double bedrooms. The main day-time area is accessed by east and west entrance doors onto the open-plan kitchen / dining / lounge area, with oak beams, a marble and granite floor, and a seating area and a ?godin? woodburner providing cosy comfort. The kitchen is a combination of ultra modern but designed as a homely combination of old and new. Off the kitchen is the systems / utility room also with the washing machine. The bathroom has a grey water flushing WC, a basin, a bath and shower. There is a new gas-fired boiler in the utility room to boost the solar thermal system on dark winter days.

Beyond is the dining room with an extendable dining table. The west-east doors open onto a gravel patio. Green house corridor (with internal planter) with 21 windows with thermal blinds. The roof is made up on metal panels to catch the rainwater. The house is totally self-sufficient for all aspects - water, power, sewage, cooling and heating, in other words is not linked to either town water or electricity; Internal greywater planters; external blackwater planter, permaculture garden (early stages). The property is not attached to either town water or the electrical grid. The beginnings of a permaculture garden contain newly planted trees, and is totally off-grip for electricity usage. It is a passive house design so usually there is no need for energy to heat or cool itself. The woodburner is used sometimes in the winter in the mornings and evenings.
